Overview of different types of interpreting services
Consecutive Interpreting
In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter starts speaking after the
speaker has finished. Normally the interpreter would be alongside the
speaker, listening and taking notes as the speech progresses. The speech
would usually be divided into sections. When the speaker has finished
or comes to a pause the interpreter reproduces (consecutively) the message
in the target language, in its entirety, as though he or she were making
the original speech.
Simultaneous Interpreting
In simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter will speak while the speech
maker is still speaking. Normally this is done using a soundproof booth.
The interpreter listens to the speaker through headphones and then relays
the speech to whomever is listening, and they receive the speech again
through headphones in the target language. Two interpreters are usually
required for this type of interpreting.
Ad hoc Interpreting
Ad hoc interpreting is spoken translation between two languages in informal
conversations between two or more people – similar to consecutive
interpreting, though usually less formal.
Other Types of Interpreting Services that you may be asked for are:
Whispered interpreting: speaking softly on a one to
one or small group basis. This method of interpreting is usually used
when a small minority of a larger meeting speaks a different language.
Conference interpreting: just means interpreting in a
conference environment. It can be simultaneous or consecutive.
Accompanied interpreting: the interpreter accompanies
a person on a tour, visit, meeting or interview and interprets on a one
to one basis.
Public service interpreting: this covers legal, health,
government services, social services, housing, and education welfare.
Legal interpreting: interpreting that takes place in
courts, tribunals, police station or solicitors. This can be simultaneous,
consecutive or ad hoc
Medical interpreting: takes place in hospitals, clinics,
and doctor’s surgeries or patients homes. This is usually ad hoc.
